Dabbling in Magic -- Blocking Universal Flow
So, you like to dabble in magic?
Magic is more that illusions. It involves the practice of Wicca, witchcraft, or alchemy in an attempt to enchant or transform a person or situation. Is the practice of these methods conducive to your personal and spiritual growth?
If we took a poll of today’s cultural beliefs about the use of these practices, we might find many conflicting answers. This post will help clarify these common terms used today.
Magic
Magic is commonly referred to as conjuring tricks and illusions such as the magic used by Houdini, Criss Angel, and David Blain – to name only a small number of the current famous magicians -- but it also refers to a the use of a supposed supernatural power to make something happen that would not likely happen without the use of conjuring.
Magic is used to make someone or something change. This type of magic can be seen in love potions and love spells. The practitioner of magic believes that their power is greater than others and that their free-will is more important than anyone else’s hence the use of magic to conjure a spell for love or money; for personal gain.
Wicca
Wicca is also referred to as magic; however, it involves a religious practice of nature-worship that is combined with witchcraft. Many Pagans[1] consider themselves Wiccan mainly because their spiritual concepts include nature-worship and being country dwellers or following the old ways of doing things. Wicca involves the use of herbal remedies and healing techniques similar to the shaman or midwives of long ago; however it also dabbles in spells and potions directed to affect change in others or a situation.
It is common for those who have embraced Wiccan beliefs as an alternative to witchcraft to find that, like witchcraft, they also use spells and potions to influence others.
Witchcraft
Witchcraft is the practice of magic or sorcery (magic done with the help of departed spirits) for malicious purposes. Witchcraft can be classifies as either white magic or black magic.
· White magic is practiced for good purposes or to counteract evil or black magic.
· Black magic is used for the purpose of communicating with departed spirits and powers in an effort to gain their help.
Note: Most often the practice of witchcraft (magic used for harmful purposes) includes but is not limited to using alluring or seductive charms and spells to gain influence over others. Witchcraft is used to deliberately change a person or situation; to bend them/it to the practitioner’s will.
Alchemy
Alchemy began in early times as an unscientific form of chemistry where the practitioner’s aim was to transform base metals into gold and sometimes to find cures for disease. It has changed overtime to include enchantment and transformation. The most important and basic concept of alchemy is to always remember the law of equivalent exchange[2] – in other words, something for something or to receive you must give something of equal value.
How does dabbling in magic block Universal flow to you?
First, the use of magic allows the practitioner to have a false sense of self-purpose. It is not our job to change others. It is our job to change ourselves; to realize that we have all that we need within us and that we are divinity manifest in human form.
Secondly, the use of magic to influence others goes against humanity’s divine and inalienable right of free-will. Free-will is the power of independent action and choice. It is the ability to act or make choices as a free and autonomous being not because someone else has influenced us by measures we are unaware of such as magic. Free will is to not be forced to choose but choosing independently of others influence. It is the ability to live autonomously, freely and unhindered by the wishes or desires of another’s influence.
Third, it limits our ability to trust the Divine plan. The Universe is all good, all knowing, all encompassing. It is perfect just the way it is and therefore we are perfect just the way we are, as is our neighbors, families, coworkers, and partners. To change this perfection by the use of magic and spells is to deny that perfection. Dabbling in magic limits our trust of a divine creator who loves us unconditionally and is intimately involved in each nanosecond of our existence.
Fourth, it opens the door for others to direct, control and lead us. The Universe is within each one of us. To seek methods outside ourselves is deny the divinity within. To seek control over others allows us to be controlled. To seek to change a person’s free will can only limit our own.
There is a Zen koan (parable) that states the true issue of trust in Divine Principles: The wind blows, the rain falls, the grass grows without any help from me. With this understanding you can open yourself to the knowledge that your needs are met, that you are loved, that you are provided for without looking outside yourself.
